This Emergency Surgical Skills Workshop is aimed at Senior Emergency Clinicians (ED and/or MedSTAR Consultants, Fellows & Senior Registrars, Senior ED Nurses and senior ICP’s) interested in learning and practicing Emergency Surgical Skills & Procedures. We are very fortunate to have the Trauma Surgeons from the Royal Adelaide Hospital instructing this workshop.

Additionally, we are very grateful to Medtronic for sponsoring this workshop in order for us to offer this unique educational opportunity. All participants will be involved in the workshop but will participate only within their scope of practice and to the degree they would in their usual practice setting.

Learning outcomes:

The workshop will include instruction and participation in multiple Emergency Surgical Skills & Procedures including:

  • Finger Thoracostomy and large bore chest drain insertion and securement
  • Unilateral & Clamshell Thoracotomy, including;
  • Identify the landmarks to release a Pericardial Tamponade
  • Identify and compress the thoracic aorta during resuscitation
  • Gain experience in how to safely perform open cardiac massage
  • Gain experience in attaining haemorrhage control for cardiac injury with finger pressure, instruments (various clamp application), direct stapling and suturing cardiac lacerations.
  • Surgical airway
  • Maybe (TBC)  –  Practice with Difficult Intravenous Access including EZIO Intraosseous Needle insertion & infusion

Emergency Surgical Skills teamDr Peter Bautz is a South African trained trauma and general surgeon. He is presently Head, Surgical Trauma, RAH. He is the former Director of the Groote Schuur Hospital Trauma Unit, Cape Town, South Africa, Prior to coming to Australia, he was the Royal trauma surgeon at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He is an ATLS, EMST, DSTC instructor and Director; His clinical interests are in penetrating trauma, abdominal sepsis, and damage control.
He is a scuba diver, and a keen underwater photographer.

Participant information:

The session will be held at SA Health Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI). A return shuttle bus transfer will be arranged for workshop participants. All participants will be required to travel to and from the SAHMRI Labs on this bus. A packed lunch will be provided for all participants to have on the way to the workshop on this day. All participants will be provided with scrubs, gown and shoe covers and other PPE to get changed into at the SAHMRI. Participants must wear closed in appropriate shoes for a wet lab.


Expressions of interest are being invited for delegates wishing to attend this workshop. As a highly specialised workshop, it is only open to senior practising doctors, senior nurses and senior intensive care paramedics, and will be available on a quota system for attendance as places are limited.
