Rashes and skin diseases are a challenging field of acute paediatric medicine.  While some exanthems can be ignored or are self limiting, many are related to significant underlying illness and need to be identified. An approach to making a diagnosis will be presented and a number of exanthems will be discussed, with particular focus on re-emerging illnesses

John Craven trained in both paediatrics and emergency medicine in order to subspecialise in paediatric emergency medicine.  After working in multiple locations around Australia and internationally, he settled in Adelaide in 2011 with appointments at Flinders Medical Centre and the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and this year has commenced with MedSTAR kids as a retrieval consultant.  He has a strong interest in improving the care of children in emergency and prehospital settings, and lectures for the Flinders University Paramedic course.
